During the “One Piece News” event (held on October 28, 2025), it was announced that the adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s work will abandon its long-running production format in 2026.

The change will begin after the conclusion of the Egghead Arc in December 2025. The anime will then enter a temporary hiatus for approximately four months, returning in April 2026 with the highly anticipated Elbaf Arc.

Quality Over Quantity: The New Format

The biggest change is structural: starting with Elbaf, the One Piece anime will adopt a seasonal model. A maximum of 26 episodes per year will be released, split into two parts (known as “cours” in the industry).

This is a drastic shift from the current format, which produces an episode almost every week, totaling around 45-50 episodes per year.

Why the Change? Solving the “Pacing” Problem

The reason for this dramatic move is to fix the fan base’s biggest complaint for the past decade: the adaptation’s pacing. The production committee announced that the new format will allow the team to adapt, on average, one manga chapter per episode.

For years, to avoid catching up to the manga, the weekly anime had to stretch its content, often adapting less than one chapter per episode. This resulted in prolonged scenes, exaggerated reaction shots, and excessive flashbacks. By going seasonal, Toei Animation will have more production time, allowing for higher quality animation, more refined direction, and, most importantly, a narrative pace that is faithful to Oda’s vision.

Fan Reaction: Concern and Celebration

The announcement has divided the community. Many long-time fans are concerned about the reduction in content volume, moving from weekly episodes to a format with significant breaks.

However, a large portion of the audience celebrated the news, comparing the move to successful seasonal anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer. The expectation is that by adopting a “quality over quantity” motto, One Piece will finally receive the high-end animation treatment its epic story deserves, especially as it heads into arcs as important as Elbaf.

Após 26 anos de uma transmissão contínua quase ininterrupta, o anime de One Piece passará por sua maior transformação até hoje.
