2025 went down in history as the “Year of the Indie.” With the overwhelming triumph of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at awards shows and the (finally!) release of legends like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades II, the bar has been set incredibly high. Can 2026 keep up the pace?
We might not have the same volume of giants, but the quality is guaranteed. We’ve selected the 5 independent titles with the potential to steal the spotlight and dominate your playlists this year.
1. Slay the Spire II
- Release: March 2026 (PC)
The king of deck-building roguelikes returns. After a brief delay in 2025, the sequel is confirmed for one of the “Thursdays in March.” Mega Crit revolutionized the genre with the first game, and the expectation is that the Early Access launch of this new chapter will be the year’s first major viral event. Prepare to lose hundreds of hours all over again.
2. Replaced
- Release: March 12, 2026 (PC, Xbox Series X/S)
Sad Cat Studios’ journey has been arduous, with development halted by the war in Ukraine. However, Replaced rises like a phoenix. This 2.5D action-platformer offers a breathtaking retro-futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic. If the narrative depth matches the cinematic pixel art visuals, we are looking at an instant classic.
3. MOUSE: P.I. For Hire
- Release: March 19, 2026 (PC, Consoles)
Taking advantage of the original Mickey Mouse entering the public domain, this FPS adopts the 1930s “rubber hose” animation aesthetic to create a chaotic and stylish noir shooter. With Troy Baker voicing protagonist Jack Pepper, MOUSE promises to blend humor, jazz, and frantic gunplay in one of the year’s most visually original proposals.
4. Mina the Hollower
- Release: TBD 2026 (PC, Consoles)
Yacht Club Games, creators of Shovel Knight, returns with a love letter to classic handhelds like the Game Boy Color. With a top-down Zelda-style view, Mina the Hollower promises refined gameplay and impeccable pixel art direction. Despite delays and internal studio restructuring, the team’s pedigree suggests the wait will be worth it.
5. The Eternal Life of Goldman
- Release: TBD 2026 (PC, Consoles)
If you love the hand-drawn animation of Cuphead, this is your game. Weappy Studio is preparing a 2D platformer that is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful titles in production. While the exact date remains a mystery, the frequency of the game’s appearances at recent events indicates that a release is imminent.
