Fans of the acclaimed Horizon franchise have reason to celebrate: a cinematic adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn is moving full steam ahead. Thanks to court documents from a recent legal dispute between Sony and PlayStation against Tencent, concrete new details regarding the film’s timeline have emerged.
Confirmed by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions—Sony’s dedicated studio for film and TV collaborations and adaptations—the movie is slated to begin filming in 2026, with the goal of hitting theaters in 2027.
“We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures,” Qizilbash stated in his sworn declaration, as reported by The Game Post. “We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”

Initially, the Horizon adaptation was planned as a TV series in collaboration with Netflix. However, those plans were scrapped in April 2025 in favor of producing a feature film instead. This shift suggests a broader ambition and a desire from Sony to bring Aloy’s epic adventure to the big screen.
PlayStation Productions has a growing track record of successful game adaptations, including the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 Gran Turismo film, both in partnership with Columbia Pictures. This continued collaboration signals a cohesive strategy to bring PlayStation’s intellectual properties to different media.
The Challenges and Expectations
With a working script already in hand, the next major step is the selection of a director, and subsequently, the casting process, especially for the actress who will bring Aloy to life. The search for a talented director who can capture the essence of Horizon‘s post-apocalyptic world and its strong protagonist will be crucial.
The film will face the task of balancing fidelity to the games’ rich narrative with the need to be accessible to a broader cinematic audience. Doing justice to the stunning visuals, colossal machines, and Aloy’s deep backstory will be an exciting challenge.
