If you were saving up for the PlayStation 6 in 2027, you might have more time than you thought. According to new reports from Insider Gaming, Sony is considering delaying the next-gen launch. The reason? RAM prices (DDR5) are spiraling out of control, and Artificial Intelligence is to blame.
The Micron Domino Effect
The crisis deepened after Micron, one of the world’s largest manufacturers, announced it would stop selling consumer-grade memory (via its Crucial brand) by February 2026. The goal is to pivot 100% to producing HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) for AI data centers, which offer much higher profit margins.
Gamers vs. Robots
With Samsung and SK Hynix following suit, the supply of memory for gaming consoles has plummeted, and prices have surged. For Sony, this creates an impossible dilemma: launch an absurdly expensive PS6 or delay the release until production infrastructure stabilizes. The 2027-2028 window looks increasingly unlikely, proving that the AI boom is taking its toll on the gaming industry.
