The God Valley flashback is one of the most anticipated events in One Piece history, and the manga is finally delivering massive revelations. Chapter 1162 unravels one of the saga’s biggest mysteries: how Kaido, the tyrant of Wano, acquired his incredibly powerful Mythical Devil Fruit.

The scene takes place amidst the chaos of the God Valley incident, where the Rocks Pirates (a crew Kaido and Big Mom were part of) are attacking the island to steal the Celestial Dragons’ treasure.

The “Lifelong Debt” to Big Mom is Explained

During the invasion, Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom) finds a treasure chest containing multiple Devil Fruits, including the coveted Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu (Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon). Just as she decides to take the fruit, possibly to give to her son Katakuri, a young Kaido (who was an apprentice on the crew) appears.

In a surprisingly comedic moment, Kaido simply strikes Big Mom on the head, knocks the fruit into the air, and devours it in front of her. This moment not only showcases Kaido’s ruthless nature but also finally explains the “lifelong debt” Big Mom claimed Kaido owed her during the Wano arc. She was the one who found the fruit that made him the “World’s Strongest Creature.”

What If Katakuri Had Eaten the Fruit?

The revelation raises one of the biggest “What If…?” scenarios in the series. Fans know that Katakuri, Big Mom’s strongest son, is already a formidable opponent who had one of the best fights in the series against Luffy. If Katakuri, with his future-seeing Observation Haki, also had the powers of a mythical dragon, he would have been an unstoppable force, and the Whole Cake Island arc would have been completely different.

The flashback also solidifies the motivations of the legendary crews: while the Roger Pirates sought treasure and freedom (like the One Piece), the Rocks Pirates, especially Big Mom and Kaido, were focused on amassing military power through the rarest Devil Fruits.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece continues to be published weekly in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, unraveling decades-old mysteries.
