Valve has announced a major technical shift for its platform: starting January 1, 2026, the Steam client will officially end support for 32-bit versions of Windows operating systems. After this date, Steam will require and only run on 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The company explained that the change is necessary as “core features in Steam rely on system drivers and other libraries that are not supported on 32-bit versions of Windows.”

Fortunately, this move will affect a minuscule portion of the user base. According to the Steam Hardware Survey, only 0.01% of reported systems are still using Windows 10 32-bit, which was the only 32-bit version currently supported.

What Happens If You Don’t Update?

For those users who remain on 32-bit systems past the 2026 deadline, Valve clarified that “existing Steam Client installations will continue to function for the near term.” However, most critically, these clients “will no longer receive updates of any kind including security updates.”

This means Steam Support “will be unable to offer users technical support” for issues related to the old operating systems. Furthermore, Valve “will be unable to guarantee continued functionality of Steam” on these unsupported versions, meaning the client could break at any time.

One piece of good news for game collectors: Valve confirmed that this change only affects the Steam Client application itself. Existing 32-bit games in users’ libraries will still run. Valve “strongly encourages all 32-bit Windows users to update sooner rather than later” to ensure continued compatibility and security.
